Do it on something in which you are interested or have a strong opinion. That makes it more interesting to do, and it will come across as better writing if you are enthused about the topic.
The next thing is to make the topic as specific as possible. The broader the topic, the harder the paper will be to do. Instead of "Middle East" say "Iraq". Instead of "Iraq" say "Baghdad". Instead of "Baghdad" say "artists in Baghdad who sell on street corners", or something like that. Get my drift?
Then, use an outline for what you want to say. It will help you alot.

I always enjoy reading what students take out of musical lyrics. Pick a favorite singer and breakdown the lyrics of the song. Research the singers background and draw a comparison between their lyrical expression and the personnel life.

How about something with a strong opinion behind it like abortion, capital punishment, or euthanasia?
