travertine is popular for many reasons. i would say that the main reason is that they're so much cheaper than the alternative. depending on which travertine, and there are several variations of them, they have more definition and details than most of granite and some marble. it's a bit more dramatic, if you will. the problem with travertine is that they are sedimentary stones, primarily composed of of calcite(calcium), which is extremely vulnerable to anything acidic, such as juice and vinegar, even if you seal it well. it is also very porous, which makes them a bit brittle. you can break a travertine stone in half quite easily. it also wears out relatively quickly and the filled holes, which is more than likely some sort of resin(glue), breaks off easily and needs to be re-finished more often than other stones. it dulls easily and typically is not as shiny as granite. they keep it semi-dull because of all of the above reasons - that it damages easily and that it can etch so much easier than granite/marble. it's cheap to purchase but there's a hidden cost - lots and lots of maintenance.

Does it matter whats in and out? If you like something go for it. fads come and go. People used to buy ugly green counters, ovens, wall paper, ect and a few years later it was out of style and they didnt like it. I looked at prices on a few web pages and found it to cost around the same as marble.

I can not find much info on travertine. It has been used for a very long time but im guessing sence its kinda new, ex. people used to give mutts away but now they say its a puggle or bug and everyone wants one because its new even though its still a mutt, people all think its better and want it.
