Oscars & Goldfish don't generally look similar. Oscars do get big over the years. Be sure to get a large enough tank (approximately 90 gallons) so the fish have space to swim & float comfortably. There are so many times when I visit my LPS & see these HUGE Oscars in a 40 gallon tank, the fish literally can't move. Also be sure to investigate on the ph, water hardness and food supplies that will keep your fish happy and living for a long time.

Before you get one you may want to spend some time learning about keeping fish to save yourself some money. Raising fish can be very expensive and time consuming if you don't know what your doing. You don't just start a tank and fill it wiht Oscars unless you are an expert unless you want to kill them and flush that money down the toilet. Do some research.

Congratulations - I hope you like your new fish. It sounds like you've seen either a red, or a red tiger oscar. These can be fun fish and get tame. I hope the lady at the store told you they can get 12-16" long! Here's some info so you know how to take care of your fish: http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_Display.cfm?

Are you talking about koi? These are usually pond fish and are actually members of the carp family.
