whenever there's a big snowstorm people go crazy and buy a lot of groceries because they think they're gonna get snowed in. why is bread, eggs, and milk the main things people buy? you really cant make anything with those three things except french toast. i know you can eat them seperatly but that would get old eating slices of bread and eggs and drinking milk

Good question. wel lthey couldn't drink soda or water because you need power for the town's purifiers to work and electricity for the refrigerator to work (includes making ice0. If the refrigertor doesnt work, then all the food they do buy will sppoil. where as bread doesn't need to be refrigerated and doesn't spoil as easily.

Oddly enough, I think the reason people buy up the things that stores tend to run out of in those circumstances is because those are the items stores tend to run out of under those circumstances.

Seriously. It's a supply and demand thing. If you've gone to the store in the age of "just in time" supply chains, it's pretty simple to see where any disruption in deliveries could create problems.

Then there's also the fact that so few people really plan for potential disasters. They have their own "just in time" supply chain issues, if you will.

There's also a short storage life for eggs, milk, and bread, while many other items are available in one form or another canned, or frozen.

Overall, it's not so surprising. Still, I do think it would be a wonderful thing if more people looked into disaster preparedness.

They are the three main staples that would spoil so they want up to date ones. You can make scrambled eggs with eggs and milk. And egg sandwiches if you add a little mayonaise.

One other reason is you can't freeze eggs. Everything else you can stick in the snow and let it freeze if your electricity goes out.

I live in Texas and when it was a slight possibility we would get a hurricane a couple years ago tuna, water, toilet paper, and waste bags disappeared. Try making a recipe with that combination.

This is why many of us were asked to built a 72-hour emergency kit, not only with radio and batteries, but also non-perishable foods and bottled water. Bread is fine, you can make Peanut Butter sandwiches, but I would highly recommend getting soups of any kind. Whether it be Chicken Noodle, Tomato, Chunky style, Ramen noodles, etc.

As far as getting perishable foods, best hope the power doesn't go out for more than 24 hours after a nasty storm blows through.

Well I guess it depends on how long you are "SNOWED IN" but if that's all you had I guess you would be glad that you had something to eat.
Most people probably need those items any way,and were going to purchase them anyway in a few days. So they buy them just in case they don't want to go out in the bad weather.
