I'm 39 weeks and my doctor just told me (yesterday) that my cervix is soft and all we're waiting on is for me to dilate. Do you have any ideas or experience as to how long a cervix can be soft until it starts to dilate?! Thanks all ; )

Your cervix could take up to a week to dilate. By soft I assume you mean thinning. I started thinning and dilating on the same day. If you are wanting labor to start then you should walk, take someone with you of course. I have also heard that eating spicy food will help you go into labor also, it didn't help any for me. The walking was the best. Walking will also help the baby move down against your cervix so that during delivery you wont have to push so hard. I have also heard that being intimate will help you go into labor. Do not do that if you have lost your mucous plug though, or of course if your water has broken or is leaking. If you are starting to have contractions, do not worry, labor is near. I would make sure that you have yours and the baby's bag packed for the hospital, have every-ones phone number that you will need, a calling card to call people (or a cell phone), and the carseat in the car. Have everything ready. The crib or bassinet, the changing table... everything. Good luck and congratulations!

softening of the cervix also called effacement is a early sign of labor...in order for the cervix to dilate effectively...effacement must occur first...judging that you are 39 wks pregnant..you may already be in the early stages of labor which can last anywhere from a few hours to a few days..so get ready! some of the natural ways to soften the cervix is by having sex...sperm is a natural prostagladin...and hormone used to induce labor

everyone woman is different and every labor is different, no one can tell you when you will go into labor, it could be hours or days. A soft cervix is a start, but it can still be a long while. Sorry.

It varies from woman to woman. I know of some who have had a check and are still firm and closed....and deliver their babies within a day. And then there are people like me, who start softening in the second trimester, and dilate to a 4 by 36 weeks....and then just stay there. LOL Don't worry...your body is working on it...and you should have a baby soon!

i don't be attentive to. i'm going to be 38 weeks on Wednesday as nicely so sounds like we share a due date! i'm -a million station, 2 cm dilated and that i've got not got any concept related to effacement. i be attentive to my cervix is genuinely gentle. With my son I went into hard paintings on his due date. i assume there's no thank you to truly tell. i'm valuable you're aggravating to work out hard paintings start up, me too.... now we basically play the waiting interest.
