When engaged in drive and gas is applied it sound like it wants to get up and go but the mph is slow to rise. Sometime if I let off the gas pedal for a minute it will help engage. Once it reaches 35-40 mph it rides beautiful. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I know very little about vehicle except what I have read online. I don't know where the rpm would be visible. Can you help?

The transmission is not shifting down to first gear. You have to get it checked, could be a sticky valve body or very dirty fluid.

It may ride "beautiful" but it's still a 12 year old vehicle. You make no mention of previous (if any) mechanical issues or maintenance issues... or if you're the original owner or not.

If you bought it used you don't know the history of it. Perhaps its had transmission problems. A car CAN ride "beautifully" with a defective transmission, it's not going to jump and shake and dance. It could simply exhibit itself by performing the behavior you're describing.

Have it checked out and get a 2nd opinion prior to committing to a repair shop.

I would suggest getting the transmission checked because it sound like it is having a hard time getting into a higher gear, but I have a question too, does the RPM go up more than you think it normally did or does it just stay in a normal range?

Well it sounds like you need to check the level of your oil make sure it's up there so your gears are not struggling to function, and so you have proper lubrication.
You also want to check to see if you have enough radiator fluid so that your car is nice and cool on a hot summer day and so it does it's job in the cooling system of your car so it's not over heating while it's driving at speeds such as 40mph.
And lastly you will want to check your transmission fluid dipstick when the car is running so you can make sure that your tranmission isn't slipping or over working on a low fluid level...
Take care of your car cause jeeps are nice when you get to know them...

A regular engine tune up in accordance with the owner's manual will help to improve over all performance. A diagnostics check by your mechanic can also point out problem areas, if there are any.
