No, it's a fictional tale. Keke Palmer is the star of the movie, she plays "Akeelah." I actually was able to see a preview of the movie before it came out in theaters at a film festival here in Southern California, and we had an audience Question & Answer session with the writer. He actually wrote the script over 10 years ago, and had several offers from companies to buy the film, but, they wanted to change his story, and he wouldnt allow it. It was very interesting.
