Yes, slavery is vital for development of any nation or rather capitalists.
Even now most of us are slaves of capitalists, but only few people realizes.

As in almost any other application, the resources that went into the coercion of slavery actually outweighed the savings of supposedly "free" labor. Individual freedom is far more productive than forced labor, and free workers would have been far more productive and less costly to the slaveholders. So, no, slavery was not vital to the nations economy, and in fact was a net drag.

It goes without saying that slavery is and was then morally repugnant, a profound affront to the dignity of the person.

What nation are you talking about? There is not a nation, or a race of being on this planet, that has not had their hands dirtied by the institution of slavery. Slavery always profited a nation's economy, much like a cheap workforce does for nations today (think illegal workers). Does this justify holding a fellow human in bondage? I think not.

The fact remains, however, that every empire: from Egypt and Babylonia, Greece and Persia, Roman and Ottoman, Spain and England, China and India, and even the U.S., was built on the back of slaves.

I don't know about the economy, but It would had been much better if slavery never occurred in history. Of course, there are lots of grudges still hanging over. Even none related people, like me, have lots of anger about the issue. Some times i picture my self as if i and my ancestors been African, man blood rushes to my head and i get really mad. Just imagine, some m**f** idiot comes to my home, takes me away (if not whole family) to other continent and decides for my life, not to mention hard labor, being as an item &......i hate this shite.

Oh yes. (I assume you mean US govt). Slavery was around everywhere in the world LONG before the US even existed.
Slavery has always been vital in all countries all over the world. It still goes on in Brazil.

I think that the country would have gone on the same but with slavery there was a lot of people that finally realized that this was so wrong and they tried to do something about it, but the people who thought that slavery was ok decided to fight to keep them. I think that making another person my slave is one of the worse things that you could do to another human being.

Slavery only made some fat southern democrats very rich. The only thing that would be different today if it never existed is we would have less crime and no crap rap.

It was bad on so many levels. They were just lazy back then. They could have and should have survived without slavery. Now we owe it to the enslaved to make it up because NOBODY should have to ever have been enslaved!
