Four wheel drive vehicles traditionally are used in rear wheel drive mode until you flip a switch or move a lever engaging the front wheels. My big Dodge truck is like this. It doesn't drive well in 4x4 mode on a dry road.
All wheel drive vehicles always drive all wheels and there is no switching. My old BMW 325iX is like this. It drives well always.

all wheel drive is full time. you can not select 4 or 2 wheels driving the vehicle. generally used on SUV's or cars. four wheel drive is an option that gives the driver the option to pic 2 or 4 wheels driving the vehicle. generally used on trucks.

Same thing. However with all wheel drive you can't switch to 2 wheel drive, which would save gas... I think.

4WD distributes equal power to each wheel, and is designed for off road conditions. AWD is where power is distributed to each wheel, but adjust when slipping or skidding is detected. AWD is for roads mainly.
