When you buy an iPod, you'll install the iTunes software on your computer.

The iTunes software makes it very easy to "rip" your existing CDs -- that is, it transfers them to your computer and from there to your iPod.

There are also free legal sites that offer downloads of smaller bands as well as illegal sites and software that will let you steal music, though I don't recommend it.

iTunes also provides several free songs each week, paid for by the record labels hoping you get you interested enough in the artist to buy the entire album.

There are also Podcasts devoted to music which offer free music that can be downloaded.

With the iPod you're paying for the convenience of having all of your existing music in your pocket. If you don't own any music yet, the iPod would be an expensive start to your collection.

Just download Limewire and download the songs for free from there. Then transfer the songs to iTunes.

if you own the music already, it is whatever you paid for the cd, but if you want to buy all your music on itunes, then it costs money, but otherwise, no.
