If your boyfriend just built this computer - ask him to check all the fans. It sounds like this baby is overheating. I do not think that a firewall would cause a computer to freeze and turn off. If you think that the firewall caused the problem - boot into safe mode and uninstall it.
How about a boot section virus?

1. Take 5 pound sledge hammer
2. Apply repeated continuous pressure until computer is reduced
to a one inch platform
3. Sweep repaired computer into basket beside desk
4. Take Girlfriend out for nice, relaxing, romantic dinner
5. Movie of her choice
6. Relax and snuggle

ok - may need to disable the firewall to get Windows XP to load -
- why was the firewall put on before Windows XP?

What system was first runnning? Did he build the computer -
or just assemble a pre- boxed computer?

best of luck! (and have a nice evening! *grin*)
