As a kid I used to "spear" my food with them! I have tried and tried and I simply cannot use them at all! Everytime I tried all the food would fall back onto the plate (great way to diet - takes you 1 year to eat a meal!), would get cramps/spasms in my fingers, felt like I was trying to write with the wrong hand!

I actually use chopsticks to eat almost every day. Once I got the hang of them, I found that they were easier to use for certain things. They're also really nice for cooking; I find them easier to maneuver than regular tongs. I just learned to be good at them by being taught by someone else who used them and by using them a lot. (For rice - the rice is first patted down into a ball in the bottom of the plate or bowl. After the rice is formed into a ball, pieces can be broken off and eaten with the chopsticks.)

If you are having problems using chopsticks, do what I do: Spear your food with the chopstick. Just jab that stick right into that food. As for rice, you're pretty much on your own. (or buy a spoon)

TOTALLY YES. Oh so much fun. One time I even learned with my left hand cuz I had tendonitis in my right- my dominant hand! I always thought it was no big deal to use these utensils but then I realized a lot of people around me couldn't- even now, mostly when I go to a local Chinese place, they use forks. I'm in Minnesota. So now I am very proud that I learned. I basically taught myself, I guess. Or maybe someone showed me a trick and then I worked my hand muscles. I don't remember. But... there ya go!

I approached chopsticks with an open mind. I found them to be an inferior way to convey food to one's mouth.

i'm chinese and my hand cramps up when i use chopsticks. i always ask for a fork. haha. just stab your chopstick through the food if you can (like dumplings and such). it makes the process a whole lot easier, especially when you're hungry!
