When you hear someone else's voice, you are only hearing the part of their voice that travels through the air.
Your ears are in your head, so some of the sound waves from your voice travel through the liquid and flesh in your body. So you hear that too (water moves faster through liquids or solids than air, so the pitch is different).

Our voice sounds in a way, but we hear it played back differently because our ears are behind the voice that we project to a person/microphone we are talking to so when we hear ourselves on a recording we hear our voice closer to what it sounds like to what we talk to and are not personaly familiar with.

Speech starts at the larynx, where the vibration comes from. Part of the vibration is conducted through the air – that's what you hear in a recorder. Another part of the vibration is directed through the fluids in our heads. Our inner and middle ears are parts hollowed out by bone – the hardest bone. The inner ear holds fluid, while the middle ear contains air, & they press on each other. The larynx is covered by soft tissue full of liquid. Sound travels differently through the air than through solids and liquids, so that's why. we are not hearing our voice only w/ our ears, but also through internal hearing.

Your voice comes from your head and your ears are part of your head. Part of what you hear when you speak is the vibrations from your vocal chords being transmitted directly to your ears through the bones in your head. For an example of how that works, tap your forehead, then tap your knee and notice how it sounds different.

ever been sick with a cold and your head is stopped up
and your voice sounds muddy -
ever been on a plane and you hold your nose to 'blow' your ears
out to equalize the pressure
that's the 'sound highway' you hear yourself with
when your voice is recorded and played back- THEN you listen to your voice through your ears
HAY - THAT'S NOT MEEEEEEEEEEEE (o yes it is - *grin*)
