I had comcast high speed internet and yahoo dsl. A router letting 2 pcs on one internet line slowed down a lot. It was ok if only one pc was being used at a time. But, if two pcs were on at the same time, not only did the internet slow down, so did the respective computers. Now I paid about $70 with tax for my router, and I'll never use one again, unless I own a bussiness that depends on using one,,,,like if I win a big lottery jack pot, or minimum wages goes up $10 more per hour!

The router allows some extra security from network attacks separate from anti-virus, anti-worms. IntraNet security is different from computer viruses on floppy discs.
The router also lets people connect a printer and another computer. Home routers have 4 10/100-Base Network Ports compatible with printers. Including PS2, GameCube, Xbox, some Tivo units. There was news about Netflix movie downloads to a Tivo and regular television. Better than Cable TV on demand.

Using just one PC at time, no. If there are multiple computers on your network using the internet and downloading at the same time then yes since you have a set amount of bandwidth allocated by your Internet service provider that is being shared with the other computers on your network. So if you have a 5 meg download speed and 4 computers on your router that are on the internet at the same time, then that 5megs total bandwidth will be split up between all 4 systems and your connection will be slower. If there is only one PC online using the router, then there is no difference since you can use 100% of the 5 meg bandwidth.

I used a router with my Cable Internet connection and I experienced little or no difference in the speed. It seemed the same to me. Just make sure you get a router that can handle the speeds of your Cable Modem. Good Luck

it will if you let other people connect to your router..... but if you use your router to connect to wirelessly, then the speeds will be slower than just a normal connection... otherwise if you have your router set up properly, it will help with being a firewall to give you better protection, make sure you set it up properly

You won't notice the added overhead of the router.

We are talking 4 - 8 milliseconds to pass traffic from one port to another.

yeah mine did about 40% still works pretty fast though.
