i have a math problem and this sign is used. the math problem is
3^2*(6-2)+8

it means to the nth power. so the aswer is
(3 x 3)x (6-2) + 8
9 x 4 + 8
36 + 8

It is a symbol for " raising to the power of". It is telling us that the term is an exponent. It is used especially on PC's for convenience, since getting the keyboard to print an exponent half a space higher than the rest of the line just isn't going to happen. So, the term 3^2 is "three squared", or "three raised to the second power".

3^2 means 3 to the power of 2 (or 3 squared=9)

It is used a lot in this forum because we can't use superscripts

It is used for exponentiation where a superscript is unavailable. So in your example, the three is squared.
