Because they are idiots! They think that they are being sooooooooo original and cool. Actually, they look like dumbfuggs. This world is going downhill. Oooooooooh, I'm kewl bcuz I can speel like dis! Lookie @ mee! I m kewl! L8terz! lol Geez, did I even do it right? I think it takes more effort to misspell then it does to spell properly. I understand a typing error, we all do it. But not on purpose! At least we try...

Not just Yahoo Answers but all over the Internet. It's a big part of the texting (as on cell phones) world. Yes, some of it is to distinguish the teens from the older folks, to be 'different' in the same way, as teens have always wanted to be. But some of it, I firmly believe, is the gradual changing of spelling that is normal to English. Look at how people spelled words 400 years ago and consider that our communications technologies have grown faster in the last century than in 800 years prior to that. In the 1500's people were still spelling many words with what we would consider extra letters, like 'sonne' for 'sun' or "knichte" for 'night'. Spelling has always been somewhat haphazard in English and trying out new versions of old word spellings is practically a tradition. I'm appalled sometimes too, but I don't think these kids are morons - just cliquish as always and experimental.

I think it is a fad. Instant messaging has taught them to do short-hand so that they can respond fast. I don't care how people type on this as it is informal. Short-hand works, too. But I suppose some people may discredit the message or the book if they don't like the cover.
Well, what about stenographers or dispatchers, etc. They use short-hand, but are able to write formally when needed. I know of highly intelligent people that use that computer IM short-hand lingo chat in on-line video games. They can short-hand for hours on end & then at the end of the day still remember how to write formally if needed. Oh, the power of the human brain!
I think kids these days know how to do both. Probably some think it's funny when they get a rise out of some people who think they are dumb when they know they're not. They probably think this is informal fun chat & that they can do it the way they want. (And snicker how they get A's in English while others assume they're illiterate.) One of my teachers showed my class what assume means. He wrote *ss/u/me on the board. Then he said, "When you assume you make an *ss out of you and me." :)

Oh good some-one else who cringes at these events.
There will be problems when I'm long gone dead.
COURTSEY - Correct Grammar is a matter of courtesy for example one says "My friend and I .." NOT " I and my friends .." This shows the courtesy of putting others first.
Correct spelling is also the courtesy of making reading easy for others, by not making them guess your meaning.
Well, good news it's catching up with the 'now' generation.
MacDonalds now advertises for people with courtesy. Employers now demand good communication and courtesy skills; does not matter what your other skills these are demanded or no job.
Yes I love happy endings when stupid, rude people get their just deserts and no sweet desserts at MacDonalds.
What fun to make spelling jokes!

It's everywhere. Some blame it on the Internet and the IM shorthand that developed from text messages. I agree with you that it is simply bad grammar and people being too lazy to type out the whole word. And no, it's not cool.

This is the text version of conversation- generally due to the fact the people used to be charged per letter texet in the day of new text.
If some sent a job app or resume with stuff like that I would be concerned. But as a 42 YO mom and employer- I don't worry about it in unformal docs.

It's just the way it is today. Kids are using the computers more and getting online and it's an easy way and quick way to type without spelling it out the right way. Unfortunately, it's horrible because most kids today end up using it in school when it's inappropriate. They are learning the wrong things to succeed in life!

It is annoying to try and decipher through the misspelled words. I think it's the trend for the younger generation... the ones who have grown up with the computer and internet.

like the rest of today's society kids like convenience and shortcuts. It's quicker and easier for them to mispell words than worrying about their grammar. Also kids have their own jargon they use when on the internet and basically these spellings could be considered a whole different language, the language of kids and teens.

They started doing this before Yahoo! Answers--back when instant messaging was new. It's their form of shorthand, rather than writing out correctly spelled words. Hopefully, they know how to write a real letter.
