Just realized how brilliant of a marketing technique Yahoo Answers is...?
Yahoo has us yahoo's working for them with out us even knowing it. Everytime we ask or answer a question we are basically giving them free data. Whether it's from our own life or the 2 mins it took to google it, and it's now all stocked pile neatly in Yahoo Answers wallet. When a similar question gets asked through other search engines Yahoo seems to pop up more and more, there fore bringing plenty of traffic there way. And that translates into cold hard cash. I like Yahoo Answers, but it just now dawned on me how brillant the Yahoo people are, they got us working for them. Just an observation.

Very true imisidro, I guess I have never really thought about all the other user generated sites. I do use my space, but I'm not much into the video sites like YouTube, my hubby is though. Wow were suckers aren't we....lol I wonder how much money one should be making for donating such independant content such as this.

Not only Yahoo, but all the "user generated content" Web 2.0 websites. It's all the rage nowadays -- as long as you control the content posted, why not get users to create the content for you. You don't need writers as you have millions of people writing and making content for you. All you do is to provide the platform

This is a strategy not exclusive to Yahoo Answers, but the slew of the most popular websites nowadays

Think of MySpace.com -- it wil be nothing without all the users who post their profile on the site

Think of YouTube -- it will be nothing without all the users who post their videos on the site

Think of Flickr -- it will be nothing without all the users who post pictures on the site

And of course, Yahoo Answers -- which will be nothing without us posting questions and answers on the site

Welcome to Web 2.0, where YOU -- the user -- creates the content that matters to you. Marketing is viral so minimal promotion is needed as User A will tell User B to check their questions or answers, and User B gets hooked as well and tells User C.

While the website owner thinks of ways how to make money from all your contribution (ads anyone?)

Yes you are completely right about the brilliance of the marketing aspect of Answers. If you make a search that matches some of the answered questions you will see it at the first page of search results - obvious priority.
Just think about the opportunities that it gives you to market yourself. Put a link to your website in your profile description and ..voila, people read your question or answer, get curious about who are you, click on your avatar and visit your site. Isn't that great.

Yahoo is more 'human' compared to Google which is more 'business' and Answers is the proof.

Of course, you're absolutely right, virtual reality with out the crazy pictures. But it ain't like you can get an education off it. I read about no advertising or something and you pointed out that each user doesn't need to advertise, links from this site appear when looking up certain words on other sites. The more users the more the site gets talked about, and the result more advertising.

Oh yes!!!

You are absolutely right, they are really bringing lot of traffic to yahoo answers by creating a huge database of question which people generally want to know.

Thats why i was wondering, why yahoo is promoting "yahoo answers" that much, its just because of what u said.

fascinating! Well the NSA should now know, when people spell badly, I am really critical of them (note the check spelling tool). I think I tell them all to go back to adult education and to be embarrassed until they figure the whole when to use a period thing.
lol

And not only that, but you also get to reveal lots of personal stuff about yourself for your NSA file. Is this a great country or what?
