Well bass is much easier to learn and play but electric guitar helps you get more chicks. When you get older good bass players are harder to find then good guitar players. I happen to play both and I enjoy playing both. If you want to play both then I suggest learning guitar first but remember it takes a lot of time and dedication to learn an instrument so you must be patient. If you practice enough you'll get better.

It seems to me that people who think playiing a bass is easier than playing a guitar just haven't gotten very far in their bass playing. It's not easier, it's completely different. However, if you get a six-string guitar, you can at least learn where the notes are because the bottom four strings on a 6-string are the same as a bass -- just an octave higher. Go for the six-string. You can also get a guitar effects box that will effectively mimic the low tones of the bass.

Good luck!

Bass and guitar are pretty different once you get good at them. Neither is easier than the other at higher skill levels. I've played bass for 6 years and guitar for 5. Bass is more rhythm and guitar is more melodic. I prefer to play bass in bands because I find it more fun. When I'm just playing on my own I prefer guitar. I think I'd recommend guitar for you though. It's a lot more overwhelming to start than bass, but like it's been said already, it's a lot more rewarding later on, especially if you want to show off to your friends or whatever.

How old are you and how large and strong are your hands?
A bass guitar can be a pretty heavy instrument if you are young.
Go to the music store and ask the clerks to show you a few guitars. They'll try them out for you. Then you try to play the fingerboard and see how your finger-size can handle it. Make up your mind after you get a chance to look around and think it over. You'll need lessons and lots of patience and persistence to learn how to play the instrument. Have fun!

I think the electric guitar would be more rewarding in the end. It may cost more, but think about how much you can learn from it. There is more music and more culture for a guitar than a bass.

I would have to agree that the bass guitar would be easier, but I personally think that the electric guitar is *WAY* cooler! I go weak in the knees for guys that play the electric guitar!!! They just seem so irresistible! =)

Go for the guitar first. Not for chicks or glory, but if you decide to switch instruments, it's easier to switch from guitar to bass than from bass to guitar.
