I think you should definately ask him out. Maybe do it in a more casual way, and make it seem like you're just hanging out. But it should have a slight hint of a date, of course. Then, if things work out, ease into a relationship. follow your gut feeling if you really love this guy.

since you're afraid to ask him out on a date-date, and apparently vice-versa, why not just invite him out to lunch, a museum, picnic or to some other place with lots of other people like an amusement park. after a couple of these outings, you can move to a date that's more like a real date and less like an outing.

i would just go and ask him out. If he wont go out you should just keep on being freinds. But ask him out in private. so nobody else can hear. and if he says no say you can still be best freinds.
