Its in Missouri. In the episode thats done like "Behind the Music", the narrarator toward the end says something to the effect of "we've seen a lot form this small Missouri family". The episode is about 5 or 6 years old.
At the end of the episode (while the Simpson family is sitting on a small hill), the narrator states: "The Simpsons' bitter past was forgotten, and now the future looks brighter than ever for this northern Kentucky family." On a second airing, the line was changed to state the family lives in Missouri rather than Kentucky.

It's not any state in particular. As you can tell from the scenery and locations in close proximity to Springfield when the Simpsons family goes on drives or short trips, it really makes no sense as to any possible locastion in the US with such diverse climates and landscapes within a small area.
Groening however has based the town of where he grew up in Oregon, so a lot of his hometown is incorporated into Springfield, although it isn't suppose to be an actual replica of any state...it's purpose is just to emulate a typical American suburb.
Also if you wathc every episode of the Simpsons they nearly eliminate every single possible state for Springfield to be located- they jusst want to make a mystery of it although Groening has admitted that there is no state.

The short answer is that Springfield does not exist. It doesn't have a real state, and the fact that it has no state is nothing more than a running gag. Springfield is more like "Anytown, USA". It's as if all of America was compressed into a single town, or a single state. Springfield is everywhere and nowhere.
Proof? No state's capital city is called "Capital City". No state's motto is "Not just another state". No state has ever had this flag.http://www.snpp.com/bin/springfield.list.DABF20.jpg

I always thought Oregon but I am leaning towards Illinois. The Simpsons were named after streets in Portland (OR) and Matt Groening was from there... so thats why I always thought Oregon.
They will never tell... one time during an episode, the point of view was from space and it quickly zoomed into earth, and it ended up in the mid-west - so Ilinois could be it.
