Buy your own instruments and store them at the nail salon. Also when you go into a nail salon, make sure you see licenses of all the nail technicians; and a recent inspection sticker; also that they clean the pedicure basin area when they are done with a customer with bleach and water. Bacteria collects in the drains of these pedicure basins and that is where women have been getting infections. Also that when they fill the water basin for pedicures that they put in an antiseptic. If you see dirty towels, dirty instruments, no sterilizers available, leave fast and find a new place. The worse nail salons I have ever seen in my life were in Los Angeles, California. Disgustingly filthy and I told them so too, as I come from N.Y. I refused to get a manicure there and I told the owner that they would be shut down in New York immediately as they had so many violations. Be very careful where you get your nails done and look for all the indications I pointed out.

The main way to stay safe is to make certain you have no cuts or open wounds on you, as this is how infection gets in. Don't shave your legs the day you get a pedicure because your skin on your legs will be freshly exfoliated and more susceptible to infection. If you can take your own files and tools for them to use. You can buy these items at Sally's or even Wal-Mart. Make certain that the nail tech is using tools that are being taken out of a clean storage box or directly from a jar of disinfectant. NEVER let them take a tool directly from another nail tech that has just been used. Don't be shy, if you think something is dodgy, speak up. It is your health.
Infections like Tyra was talking about are quite rare. Staph is always every where & our immune systems are constantly fighting off the infections. Don't be scared, just be smart.
Every state has guidelines to follow. This is the link for Texas to see what these guidelines are. If you are aware of them, YOU can know when something is amiss. http://www.license.state.tx.us/cosmet/cosmet.htm

Some nail salon places allow you to buy your own kit.. you purchase it for 10 and they actually store it for you so every time you come you get your kit and they sterilize in front of you.. I've also seen people come in and ask the professionals to use their instruments they bring in..
