I'm pregnant with my 2nd child and have had a slight bladder control problem ever since my first was born, nearly two years ago. When it happens, it's not much and occurs only if I sneeze really hard -- or when I had morning sickness early in this 2nd pregnancy. My second child is due in a few months and I'm afraid the problem will only get worse.

Has anyone else dealt with bladder control problems this long (2 yrs) after giving birth? Are kegal exercises the answer here? And can i expect this to get worse with each child? Thanks...

Yes, I've dealt with it myself. (My daughter is 6 years old now) And Kegal exercises did help quite a lot. I'm pregnant with #2 now (39 weeks), and I have the problem again, but like you, only when I sneeze really hard or when I throw up (had really bad reflux earlier today and I'm just glad it was just me & my husband at home at the time). It's so embarrassing to not have control over basic bodily functions! The Kegals do help a lot, though. Talk to your OB-GYN about it. Maybe they can suggest something, too.

Bladder Problems After Giving Birth

Hey Grapes, 2 things... thing 1.. talk to your Dr about it.. thing 2.. kegel excercises.... tightening the vaginal floor muscles holding and releasing.. does great things not only for bladder control problems.. but also when giving birth.. Take it from the mom of 3 who at 40 has no problems with bladder control problems.. Kegel's are the way to go.. but also talk to your doc.. the bladder and uretha get squished and stretched during pregnancy.. sometimes it does require surgical repair. My mom had to have surgical repair after having 6 children. My aunt also after 4.. it depends alot on the pregnancies.. but always talk to your Dr about bladder problems.. they are the best source of info.
Good luck with the new baby....

I had my second baby on DEcember 23rd....I too had issues with bladder control. Unfortunately, I now also have issues with bowel movements. I mentioned these problems to my midwife at my PP check-up...and when she did my exam she discovered that I have both a cystoseal and rectoseal(I apologize for my spelling). They are quite common in women who have had vaginal births of larger babies(mine were 8.14 and 8.5). The vaginal muscles have pockets that have now seperated....which is the source of my problems. I have been told to continue to do my kegels, but if things haven't improved by the time my baby is 3 months I will be looking at surgery to repair my vaginal walls. This surgery is only recommended if you are done having children though, because subsequent pregnancies run the risk of blowing everything out(for lack of a better term) again.

Have you discussed this with your doctor? There is a small surgical procedure they can do to tighten the musles around the bladder. Kegals are good though. I did them after my hysterectomy because I refused HRT and had a bladder/leakage problem. Also don't be embarassed to use super absorbant femine napkins...I did if I was going out and wasn't sure if I would leak...who is going to know what they are for when you purchase them?

Kegels are very important now. Make sure you are doing them correctly and long enough to help.

After you have the baby see your doctor and see if your bladder has fallen. Mine had after my 2nd. ( I have 3). It was not fun with the third i lived in the restroom.

A fallen bladder is common also they will check you for slacking at your 6 week check up. So make sure at your check up to tell them about your bladder again they will not do anything about it right now.

I have lived with the same thing since the birth of my son. I wear kotex Light days sometimes(they are super thin not like regular thin linners even, better)

But I think its just because your muscles got stretched so much or something. I had bad tearing witht he birth of my first son

definately do the kegal exercises. it helps a lot and it helps keep your sex life intersting. the doctor told me that it takes time for the body to heal down there and it all depends on how fast it heals.
