Okay, before i simply answer your question, let me make some clear points first..

1. Emotions -may- be temporarily, but... do you clearly positively guarantee that you don't miss any of the happiness you have been through in the past? Are you willing to replace them with sadness or just a total blank sheet of paper?

2. Ronin, Life is not meaningless. If it is, why don't you just jump of the building? Every has a meaning. Why are you here? To answer [probably to you.. the stupid type: ] questions. You're still doing something with a meaning. Everything does, you live for a reason, to gain money, to play games, to explore, anything. Everything has a meaning. Like even jumping off a building, the meaning is to die... So, i disagree that there is no meaning to life. There is, you just don't want to find that meaning, you are just trying to hide it.

Yes, emotions are temporarily... but, can you say, that you don't care about them. Are you willing to live your life just blank, no happiness, no bitterness, no color, no sourness, no sweetness? Nothing?

We all seek happiness to give life a bit of taste, a bit of difference.
That's my simple answer.
We just want to feel more than just a blank same thing.

It's like a story. Do you just want a story that talks just one thing:
I go to school, I go home. Then, on the next day, i go to school, i go home. They day after that, i go to school, i go home.
It's boring, no one would enjoy it. Transferring to:
It is a very windy day, nice and cool. I rushed through my door and ran out. I went to school, sadness happened, i cried, I failed my test.
It's that better. It's like us seeking happiness. We just want some changes to bump up our lives, making it funner, more exciting, to have life have more meaning.

Emotions are temporary, but powerful feelings. If we were to feel the same emotions all the time, there would be no point. If we o not experience happiness, how do we know we are experiencing sadness? Everything has opposites to keep things in balance. Everything goes full circle. Whatever emotion you feel now, you will feel the opposite at sometime, then you will go back to that emotion. Hence, we learn an appreciation for the more pleasurable emotions-- bliss, happiness, love etc and strive to regain them.

No reason, just habit. The alternatives would be to avoid happiness or not seek any emotion whatsoever. Life is meaningless so what's the difference if someon chooses to pursue happiness? It doesn't matter either way.
