"Protestant" is a name covering all the non-Catholic Christian churches. Henry VIII made himself head of the Church of England which is called the Anglican Church in Australia and some other countries and the Episcopalian Church in the USA. Henry's son, Edward VI, followed the new religion but Edward's sister, Mary I, took the country back to Catholicism. This was reversed by Elizabeth I.

All monarchs of England since Henry VIII have held the title "Defender of the Faith". It is used, these days, to mean that the monarch is guardian and head of the Church of England. Ironically, the title was given to Henry by the Pope for a paper he wrote defending the Catholic Church.

i'm tremendously valuable that the top of the Anglican church is the Archbishop of Canterbury. Queen Elizabeth may well be head of the Church of england yet no longer the Anglican Church itself. i'm an Episcopalian (an American Anglican) and we understand the Archbishop because of the fact the top of our church. easily, the Anglican Church is international (form of like the Catholic Church) and the Church of england is an component to that greater effective community as is the Episcopal Church.

Elizabeth the 1's father, Henry the 8th, split with the Catholic church and formed the Church of England (also known as the Anglican church). It is one of many Protestant churches. He appointed himself the head of that church. Since then, every monarch of England has been the head of the Church of England. They are not the head of any other Protestant churches.
