There's a bumper sticker a lot of us have on our pick-up trucks. It reads: "I wasn't born in Texas but I got here as soon as I could."
I'm one of those folks being a transplanted New Yorker.
The history of Texas is filled with people who ran from bankruptcy, bad love affairs and the law to make a new life for themselves.
Yes, its true, my neighbors are way more conservative than I am. They spend more time in church every week than I've spent in my life. They love NASCAR and Jesus (in that order) more than I ever will. So, okay, we don't see eye to eye on everything.
But Texas is also big and brash, filled with exuberance and excess, and utterly unashamed.
Mainly its welcoming and friendly no matter what differences you could find if you looked.
When I first came to Texas a decade ago, I wandered into Stan's Blue Note on Greenville Avenue in Dallas. Within a few minutes someone asked "where y'all from?" I said that I had just moved to Dallas. "Hey everybody," my interogator announced, "We got us a New Texan." "Let me buy you a beer," were his next words.
That's what Texas is. A place that says no matter who you are or where you're from, you're one of us.
So I found a home, now 'm a Texan, and proud to be one.

I love the fact that we have such a variety of climate and land types. Desert. woods, hills, lakes, beach, canyons, snow, heat, all in one great state. I love that we have accents unlike others. I love that we don't give a hoot about anyone else other than other Texans. We stick together. I love big hair and pretty nails. I love being both a southern lady and simutaneously a tough western woman. I love our beautiful natural Padre Island barrier reef to the mainland. I don't like the people who come to Texas and hate it and stay around anyway. Leave and let the door slap your @ss on the way out, would you?

I can say Dallas Fortworth airport as the best airport ever. That's the only place that I've been in Texas.
