The main difference between a democrat and a republican is the way that they interpret the constitution. Most Republicans interpret it as word for word, and follow the precedents set forth by the courts over the past two hundred years. Democrats, on the other hand, interpret the constitution more generally, and don't follow suit as clearly on landmark cases as do the Republicans, they usually believe that times have changed, therefore the circumstances of the cases of changed. The basic concept of party affiliations is ideology, this is what makes a Republican a Republican or a Democrat a Democrat, but how they get these ideology depends mainly upon the way they interpret the constitution and the judicial and political history of our country.
The easiest way to tell the difference between Repub and Demo is to look at party platforms.
Repub: Pro-life
Demo: Pro-choice
Repub: Pro-business
Demo: Pro-worker
Repub: Pro-military
Demo: Pro-social
Repub: Pro-privitization
Demo: Pro-government program
Repub: Pro-self determinization
Demo: Pro-helping hand
Repub: Pro-deregulation
Demo: Pro-regulation
Repub: Pro-development
Demo: Pro-open space
This list could get very long, so I'll stop here.
These issues have bled one way or the other in the hopes of finding the sweet middle ground of majority votes. However, the middle ground is also soft ground. I think this will be shown to us again this coming election season.
When you make your choices in the voting place, keep in mind the party platforms--not just the one-liner jokes, the personalities, and the brainless media ads.

Hello Camu,
As you already know asking about politics will get many answers and opinions.
There is no real difference, Humans are people, some are Liberal some are Conservative, some are Extreme Right some are Extreme Left. The Right Wing Conservatives are normally the ones that like to be called Republicans, the ones that are for Left Wing that like to try Change or new ideas are called Democrats.
There are some from each party that take it just a little to far. There are some from each party that make a little sense, there is no right or wrong party. There are good and there are not so good individuals. That is politics, that is why we pay taxes, that is why we fight, that is why we make peace.
I am certain that in Peru there are extreme Liberals and Conservatives. Neither are right, nor are they wrong, there is a happy center place were they meet at and sometimes make sense. Not often, but that is why they are paid the big $

If you truly are unaquianted with the two political parties of the USA I'm afraid you will not get much useful information from an unmoderated forum such as this.
I do think that is helpful for EVERYONE to read the Platform documents of both parties. I have linked to them.
When you read them you must bear in mind that these are written by skilled lawyers and public relations specialists who are most concerned with NOT providing "incriminationg sound bites" or their written equivalent to the media.
Further I think it somewhat helpful to research the roots of both parties, again I have provided some links.
I think it is NOT very useful to look at an individual as completely representative of the views of either party for several reasons. The first is that many individuals switch party alliance, often due to the particular circumstance that they perceive as making their own advancement more likely. Second, it is useful to remember that in the American system the emphasis is on stability -- the vast bulk of the goverenment is made of people who remain full time employees of the government with out regard to which party is in the majority. Even the various switches that occur after elections are moderated by the fact that there are overlapping terms of the President (4years) Representatives (2yrs) Senators (6yrs).
Good luck doing this research.

In essence they are the same, however, democrats are more fically oriented, while repulicans are more trigger happy (I don't mean that as a bad thing)! Democrats believe that we should keep to ourselves while republicans believe that we should be active in the world. But the major thing that set them apart is how they stay together. Democrats are willing to stay together no matter how bad the situation nor how bad one of their members are making them look. However, republicans believe in staying alive no matter what (like I said, not neccessarily a bad thing). But why think about parties! OUR government should be together no matter what sets us apart. They should think past the problems between their parties and work on the problems that America has.

Some of the answers on here are just shameful. What is wrong with you people? A question is answered and all you can do is spew hate and create chaos. Good job young America! Republicans and Democrats are two types of political parties in the US that one can belong to (though there are others). They have different view points on things such as gun control, abortion, taxes, war, education reform, and many other important issues. If you go to "Google" you can do a search on each one or click on one of my links.

Difference #1 The collection of ideas
The Democrat Party prefers a collection of viewpoints that come from liberal, left wing political thought. Ideas presented in blue on this blog. The Democrats are seated on the left side as they enter the Capital building. The Democrat's mascot is the Donkey. They are often represented by the color blue on election maps. Sometimes Democrats call themselves "Progressives"
The Republican Party prefers a collection of viewpoints that come from conservative, right wing political thought. Ideas presented in red on this blog. The Republicans are seated on the right side as they enter the Capital building. The Republican's mascot is the Elephant. They are often represented by the color red on election maps. Sometimes Republicans call themselves the "Grand Old Party" or "GOP"
Political parties are united by a collection of viewpoints on a variety of issues and ideas. Many issues are presented in 2 opposing viewpoints typically trying to make something legal or illegal.

A lot of the above answers are biased. Here's a general overview of the difference:
Republicans: More conservative; traditional, pro-life (like not allowing abortions because it is not moral). Most Republicans justify the War in Iraq.
Democrats: More liberal, pro-choice (like freedom to have an abortion). Most Democrats are against the War in Iraq and fight for peace.

I think if you really need to know the actual difference between the two parties you need to search elsewhere, some good sites were given in earlier posts. I can't say any more because I am an angry Independent/Democrat. And nothing I can say here would help you. I am biased.

Republicans are or used to be more for the white collar workers and the Democrats were for the the blue collar workers , But the new White House is more for them selves living in a little world all of their own , making sure that they all will have money beyond belief of the average worker, for the rest of their lives ,after leaving their jobs .We need to rename it The Fat House .

the democrat guys are like for the poor people, the colored people, if you 're little people, and have no money, or have color on your skin, then you're mostly democ
