My Dad and I were watching a movie called the Departed the other day and he was absolutely appalled at the laguage used in the film. I asked him where he had been for the last twenty years because language like that is fairly common in movies these days. He seemed to think that this is one of the first films to use the "F" word, I assured him that the first film to use this word happened a long time ago. Can anyone please shed some light on this topic?

It is mostly said that Marianne Faithfull was the first to use the "f" word in a mainstream film, in 1967's "I'll Never Forget What's 'Is Name". Some sources may dispute that, saying it was "Ulysses", also from 1967.

"I'll Never Forget....." was the first; sez the reference books--the first use of it I remember distinctly was in M*A*S*H, during the football game. The line, "Awright bud, you're f**kin' head is coming right off." drew a short collective gasp from the audience, then a collective guffaw as the game's very unorthodox play continued. And that was some 37 years ago! (1970)
