It is from the cotton that comes out of the weave of the pockets themselves and from other clothing in the laundry. Maybe you have a really old T-shirt and it's gotten to be very thin to the point of being transparent because most of the cotton fibers have worked free from the weave? Have you ever paid attention to that?

Anyway, that's where lint comes from. Other types of fabric produce lint to varying quantities.

If you were to save all the lint, it could be made back into fabric.

Friction rubs loose fibers off the cloth on your clothing. Fibers that can fall free are too small to be noticed individually. Fibers that get trapped in the pocket, which acts like a fishing net, clump together and form wads of lint.
