If I am dialated a finger tip (which is like a centemeter right?) and my cervix is thinned then what does that mean? I mean i know that it obviously means my cervix is open but I always thought you were about to be in labor like within a week when you started to dialate... ... can anybody explain all this to me??

Dilation is the diameter ( 0-10cm ) of the opening of your cervix, think of the thinning of the cervix kinda means " your cervix is getting softer " it must get soft ( thin ) in order to dilate. Dialation can begin weeks before you go into labor...and thats a good thing ! The more you dilate before.....less work you have to do later......I was dialted 1.5 cm near the end of April 2006, May 9th I was dilated 4 cm......my daughter was born May 24th......but this was great because I was already almost half way there and labor hadnt even begun yet ! hope this helps

As the baby puts pressure on ther cervix it will start to thin out, and the cervix will start to dilate. This can happen during labor, but for most women it happens in the last 1 to 2 weeks of pregnancy. For me, I would dilate 1 cm a week or so before labor started. But it would take me a few hours of active labor to go from 1 to 5 cm. Once I hit 5 cm, then I would go from 5 to 10 cm in about 10 minutes. The nurses said that the had never seen someone so excited to hit 5 cm, they never beleived I would it 10 cm within 10 minutes... boy, did I surprise them every time.
Anyway, good luck.. Enjoy your baby and don't wish the time away, it passes way to fast!

It depends on your body. I was 1cm dialated last week, and am 2cm this week (39 weeks preggy), and still no significant contractions. With my first pregnancy, I was only 1cm dialated when the hard-core contractions hit, then a few hours later my daughter was born. Every person and every pregnancy is different. As long as your water hasn't broken and you're not having contractions less than 5 minutes apart, I wouldn't worry. That's what the nurse in labor & delivery told me.

Your cervix take time to ripen and soften..it could be a while. Being dilated is good, but that too can take a while. I was 2cm for a week before I went into labour.
I think by the sounds of it that you will probably go into labour soon.
You can be dilated and not be in labour. You just have to wait for labour to start.
Best of luck to you and Congrats!
