Marketing major will help you for the business side of advertising -research, product, message, etc.
It is more analytical than creative.

Graphic design is for the creative side of advertising - designers usually take care for logo, TV ads, general image impression, etc.

You have a few choices: Business, Marketing, Advertising...it depends on the school you attend.

That said, I have found that the people who actually get jobs are ones with a degree AND experience. I'd recommend you get an internship doing advertising work, or a part time job. Having the degree makes you one of thousands. Having the degree AND experience makes you desirable in the job market.

Some schools have Advertising classes within their Marketing major so take a closer look in the course catelogs.
You may want to minor in Graphic Communication or something in film, possibly (TV ads).

You may find some schools that have Advertising majors. You may also want to find out which ones have a strong reputation--successful alumni.

The University of Texas at Austin, The College of Communications has a degree in Advertising. Don't forget to take "Perception" as one of your Psychology credits, it will come in handy later if you go into any of the visual mediums.
