I know exactly what you mean!! A lot of stuff that people tell you is JUNK.. Extras.. I just had my little one 9 months and this is what I had waiting for him...

Crib, changing table, diapers, wipes, diaper rash cream, mylicon (gas relief med), about 6-9 onezees, about 6-9 outfits (you won't dress them up like you think you will), socks, shampoo, baby Wash, baby lotion, bassinet(optional), diaper bag, 7-8 bottles, pacifier if using one, nose sucker, ear thermometer, medicine measure, finger nail clippers, baby bath, 3 baby towels, 5 baby wash cloths, 7-10 baby burp cloths(cloths diapers are best), mobile for bed(optional) 5+ blankets(never can have to many), 4-6 receiving blankets q-tips, cotton balls, and alcohol.. MOST IMPORTANTLY CAR SEAT!!

3-6 months.. highchair, crib if you have not gotten one, more cloths diapers, bouncy seat, jumper.. ..

that is what I have used so far.. I hope that this helps you a little.. I bought a lot of unnecessary stuff and I hate it cause now he will never use it

Buy it as you go. You'll need... one-two packs of newborn diapers (pampers swaddlers are best to start), if you are going to be formula feeding, buy cases of that, as long as the expiration date is far enough off. Buy lots of baby wipes. Diaper rash cream is a must have. Buy baby wash(dove is best for sensitive skin) Buy lots of bottles (stage one, slow flow nipples), a couple of newborn soothers, lots of clothes.. only a few sleepers and outfits in newborn size, more in 3-6 months size (babies grow out of clothes quickly), hats and booties, stroller and car seat, bouncy chair, baby swing( you won't regret it),thermometer(for underarm), gripe water, baby q-tips, medicine dispenser (for gripe water), baby lotion, blankets, hooded towel, and whatever else strikes your fancy. Babies need a lot of stuff! And most of that time, that stuff is terribly expensive. You have unti the baby is born to buy it all. Just buy it as you go, whe you can so that you aren't stressing out inthe days before your baby is born. Good Luck and Congrats.

Ok alot of stuff people get is just fancy crap that looks cool but baby doesnt actually need. When I was little I wanted it all but when I had my babies I only got what I needed.
Basic cleaning-care:
# nappies (although its good to buy lots beware as baby may grow super quick, my 2nd was out of newborn size in 2 weeks)
# wipes (can never have to many, best to get unscented ones)
# nappy rash cream
# cotton buds, cotton balls
# baby powder
# baby lotion ( if used on babies bum after nappy change less likely to get nappy rash, just put a tiny bit on cotton ball and wipe over gently)
# baby oil (for cradle cap)
# soft face washers for bath time
# baby soap or bath wash
# soft baby towels

Clothes: remember to prewash everything before baby gets here
Basic clothes like jumpsuits and play or gro-suits get a few of these but not to many
# cardigans (a couple)
# singlets
# a few pj's
# beanies, booties and mittens (newborn always scratch themselves)
# soft cloth to use as burbing rag, cloth nappies are great for this.
Babies grow out of them all so fast they barely get to wear any of it.
Lots of blankets and muslin wraps. muslin wraps are great in summer when its too hot for a blanket but baby still needs to be wrapped up or as a shade cloth over the pram and if breastfeeing in public, just toss over shoulder that way neither you or baby get hot but you are still covered up)
My daughters are 6 and 4 and I still use both the blankets and muslin wraps, except now they are lap blankets for long trips or snuggling on the lounge.

What else
# Cot if you arent going to co-sleep,
# Pram ( make sure you learn how to collapse it and put it back up in the store, make sure it isnt to heavy to lift with one hand, and if you use public transport make sure it isnt too bulky when its folded so it fits in buses. It's also best to get one with a 5 point harness/seatbelt.
# Bouncer or Rocker,
# Car seat: make sure its installed correctly in your car and learn how to install it properly yourself (There are professional that can do this for you)
# Pouch or baby sling if you want one

And I think thats really about it oh get a themomitor ( the expensive ones that get a quick reading in the ear are best and most reliable) but the underarm ones are good as well just less convieniant to hold a squirming baby and get a correct reading.

And get clothes in the bigger sizes as well in case baby is big.
I think that is all you really need. Thats all I had with my daughters, I had many many many more clothes but they didnt even wear half of it as they grow so quickly and they were both summer babies so were in nappies most of the time and if we went out I put them in a tie dyed singlet top.

I rang my friend and asked what she had with her kids. The first 3 had the basics but the 4th had everything you could imagine and she didnt need or use any of it. The swing, bassinette, vibrating bassinette, 3 different sterilisers etc.

Good Luck and I think its best to start getting stuff after about month 3. But the thing is when you buy big expensive stuff think about if you are really going to use it.
Like I didnt get a change table I just changed my kids on my bed or on the floor, I had a little basket with the wipes and lotion etc in the lounge room and a change mat and that was it.
So yeah just use your common sense, remember they grow out of everything so quickly no matter how cute it is. Like bassinettes.

Good Luck and happy shopping. There is nothing more fun than buying baby stuff !!!!!
