Back to the boneyard: Taco Bell's chalupa-loving Chihuahua campaign is scrapped

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Drop the Chihuahua!

In a surprise announcement Tuesday, Taco Bell Corp. said it has decided to replace its top executive and the advertising agency that introduced the chalupa-loving talking pup in commercials.

Peter C. Waller, president of the Irvine-based fast-food chain since 1997, will be replaced by Emil Brolick, 52, a 12-year veteran at Wendy's International Inc. who has overseen product development and strategy at the burger chain.

The Chihuahua, known for his trademark slogan "yo quiero Taco Bell," will not play a prominent role in future ad campaigns, though it might get a cameo role now and then, said David E. Novak, chairman of Taco Bell's parent company, Tricon Restaurants International.

(From Wikipedia)
Despite the dog becoming a popular pop icon, the restaurant's declining sales caused the company to retire the role and replace with new advertisements. It did cause a few rumors that the dog was retired after an accident. It was also rumored that the model "Gidget" had passed away, but Taco Bell denies this, saying the dog is currently living with owners in La Grange, Texas.

Yes, the dog died. But, in 2000, some Hispanic groups complained about the use of a chihuahua with a Spanish accent as being a negative stereotype. So, Taco Bell discontinued using the dog in their marketing.

Taco Bell got sued for using the idea without paying the two guys who came up with it. Rather then having to pay the guys more royalties, they got rid of the dog.

He had his 15 minutes of fame and now Taco Bell has moved onto a new advertising strategy. Nothing lasts forever especially in the world of advertising.

He's probably why people were getting sick. It wasn't ecoli or anything, it was his meat in the taco.

And everyone knows that mexico isn't the cleanest place ever, what would make a dog from there clean?

haha...the ecoli was a cover-up, OBV. =)

I heard that he got hit by a car and they scraped him off the road and fried him up and served him to costumers and now there is a huge lawsuit over the whole ordeal.

He was not here legally so they kicked him back to Mexico. He could not fight about it because he only spoke Spanish. But I rescued him and turned him into a girl and now I have a lovely chiuahuah girl named Rowdee. She's my baby girl. LOL
