Doesnt it seem that way to you? Does anyone have an explanation?

That is an excellent question.

The metaphor is that a life altering event seems at it's worse before you discover the solution to a problem. Similar to the saying 'Seeing the light at the end of a tunnel.'

The metaphoric opposite is that your life seems at it's best before that life altering event occurs and you enter the darken state.

I hope that made sense.
