Humane society?

I am going to put an application in to a humane society but I need to know about how long it will be before I know if I can volunteer. Also, I want to know what types of things I will be doing in more detail (link below, either kennel assistant or canine specialist). I really want to work with the animals because I would like to go into a career with dogs (possibly training and opening a shelter). If I have the choice between the two, which would be best (I really don't want to teach any classes but will if absolutely have to)?

P.S.:
I am only 16, in high school out of the town where it is so I can only work on weekends

The HSUS (Humane Society of the United States) is nation wide and have myriad projects going on at the same time. One of the biggies is fund raising. They were also active in rescuing animals from Katrina. They are not limited to companion animals, but also work to protect wildlife. At your age and circumstances I would suggest finding a local no-kill animal shelter to volunteer with. You could work with a variety of animals doing such work as walking/supervising a play area, cleaning up, (yuk), or with a local veternarian. If you can only work weekends, see if there is an emergency vet hospital that is open when regular vets are closed. As far as when: I don't know of a single shelter that can't use volunteers. Volunteering will give you a real head start if you want to make this your life work.

If you truly want to work with animals go to a local animal "welfare'" organization, NOT an animal rights group! HUSA (Humane Society of America) is an ANIMAL RIGHTS ORGANIZATION run by Wayne Pacelle who is a left-wing animal rights activist. You do not want to be involved with these people, who, along with PETA care NOTHING about animals. Why not go to your local Vet or SPCA & see about volunteering your time & energy. Sometimes the local SPCA needs volunteers like yourself to foster animals before putting them up for adoption.Your time could be of great value; also, check out some local boarding or grooming kennels, They always need a helping hand & the experience with dogs you will gain will be invaluable to you.The pay isn't great & it's a tough job, but if you want "hands on" this is it! PS: you will know the difference between animal rights groups & animal welfare people... the former just want your money, the latter just want your time!
