This is too general a question. Trust is something earned, however why we trust someone varies with the individual.
Trust can be assimilated with love or to like someone. The basis of it would imply that you feel secure in your decision or relationship.

the basis for trust is purity of experience, when you are born you trust everything and anything... as you grow up you learn to distrust.

distrust is a learned behavior reinforced by negative or frustrating experiences.

All people should trust one another and be given that. The moment it is broken is when you become more alert. Then you decide if what that person has done is worth your time in friendship or love.

A good self image. Trust is the perception that the other person loves us...without a good self image, we can only doubt that anyone can love us, and thus, no trust.
