Idle speed set too high or to low. most Idle speeds are between 650- to -800 rpms. At 1000 rpms would be too high for an automatic causing the transmission torque converter to want to transfer power--but can't and causes the engine to stall and die--if you hear or feel the car jerk as you put it in gear then die-- too low and you put it in gear it will die. Also look for a step-up or step-down throttle solenoid that maybe malfunctioning or even you may have a bad throttle position sensor affecting the transmission to send the torque converter to go to lock-up in error (okay, only found this one happen twice in the last 20 years)

It sounds like the Idle Aircontrol Valve or motor "IAC".... you might get away with giving the intake a really good cleaning with some intake cleaner... you can take the IAC out and hose it down with carb cleaner and put it back in. see if it makes a differance. If not buy a new one, there not to bad.. that year and model souldnt be over $60. you might also have a vacume leak, but not very common... i would clean the intake and IAC, then go from there... if it still messes up, buy an IAC

Is it a Dodge? And, if so, more than likely it is a locked up torque converter. Where you having any transmission problems before this problem occurred? If so, you may have to take it to a transmission shop.

In line fuel filter but really it would help if you would have even thought about telling us what kind of car you have and the year. I mean carburetor or injectors? Front or rear wheel drive. We're not psychics!

sounds like the lock up clutch on your torque converter is stuck in the "locked" position, take it to a mechanic and have them check it out

Do you have an electronic chip in your ignition key? It may have failed or you replaced it with a cheap one. Get a key from a dealer.

Are you running it too quickly after starting it? Give it time to warm up.
