A shrimp is not a prawn, actually, although the two terms are sometimes used interchangeably in the seafood industry. Scientists draw a pretty distinct line between them, though. Prawns are custaceans that look almost exactly like shrimp. A prawn's gills branch out, but a shrimp's gills (like crabs and lobsters) are arranged in layers or lamellae.
