There is a book I read in high school english and I can't remember the name or the author. Please it's driving me crazy! I don't remember exactly all the details but I do remember it was maybe early 1900s a wealthy white family. They had a african american "helper" who had a bit of a mental problem. One night the daughter of the white family got drunk and the black man was trying to keep her from waking everyone and he accidentally killed her. He didn't realize what he did was wrong but when he did, he tried to cover it up. That's really all I remember from the book, so if this rings a bell with anyone PLEASE let me know.

It is indeed The Native Son by Richard Wright. Here is the info from the novel that you describe in your question;

When they arrive back at the house, Mary has passed out altogether and Bigger has to quietly carry her upstairs to her bedroom. The blind Mrs. Dalton walks in as he is placing her on her bed. Terrified, Bigger covers Mary's face with a pillow so she won't call out. However, he accidentally suffocates her and the disgruntled mother leaves. Bigger panics.

It is Native Son by Richard Wright. I read it in AP English in high school, and that is definitely the book you're describing. A very powerful work.

"To Kill a Mockingbird is a 1960 novel by Harper Lee, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1961. Lee's only novel, a coming of age novel, is told from the point of view of Jean Louise "Scout" Finch, the young daughter of Atticus Finch, a lawyer in Maycomb, Alabama, a fictional small town in the Deep South of the United States. She is accompanied by her brother, Jem, and their mutual friend Dill."
