My son is 2 weeks old tomorrow, his umbilical cord has not fallen off yet, and it bleeds sometimes. The blood never gushes, but it will... ooze? out from around the stump. It doesnt seem to bother him, but there is an awful lot more blood than I'd like. Is this normal? he doesn't see the doctor untill next friday. Should I take him in earlier, or is the bleeding okay?

No no, the bleeding is 100% normal! It just makes for a little bit more laundry. I will likely have fallen off before your doctors visit. Just be aware of anything foul smelling coming from the area, or any dicoloration or pus. If you see, or smell any ofthose things, its signsof an infection and he should be seen right away. Otherwise, blood...normal! Good Luck with your little man nd congratulations!

Being a nurse for 28 years I never saw a real issue/problem with a umbilical cord of a baby in the first 6 weeks. The umbilical cord is fading and will fall off. If your inner voice as a parent says something is not right, always follow through and seek professional help. Listening to your inner voice will save you a lot of unnecessary suffering.

Normally, umbilical cord of the baby usually falls off 7 to 10 days.Contants cleaning of the cord with alcohol prevents infection.Once the cord starts to detached it bleeds a little. If there is severe bleeding then it must be reported to the doctor. All you can do for now is to put pressure on the cord remember it has 2 artery and one vein inside. If the bleeding stops it might be that the cord was accidentally pull out or was rub hard against something. If it doesnt stop then the stump needs to be reclamped or sutured right away.

It is not normal for the umbilical cord to bleed, especially after 2 weeks. Normally, the unbilical cord mummifies within 3 - 4 weeks. I recommend you see your pediatrician immediately and not wait until next Friday. Your son might need to have the umbilical cord cauterized to stop the bleeding. This is a chemical cauterization using silver nitrate sticks. For the meanwhile, since the umbilical cord has not completely mummified, do not immerse him completely in water; instead, only sponge bathe him. Try to keep the diaper away from the umibilical cord to prevent mechanical injury.

yes it is normal to have some blood on the umbilical cord
You may notice a red, raw-looking spot right after the stump falls off. A small amount of fluid sometimes tinged with blood may ooze out of the navel area. This is normal. The navel area should dry out within a few days. It should dry completely and look mostly healed within 2 weeks after it falls off.

It should be pretty much dried up and falling off by now. If it is bleeding it could be more possible for an infection. Make sure you are using alcohol wipes on it after every diaper change and you are not getting it wet when you bathe him. Call the doctor and ask them what they think you should do. Make sure you keep the diaper off of it too!

up to a certian point but i believe at my sons 2 or 4 week appointment the doctor cortirized it and then it stopped. but being a new mom is great cause for concern and of course our worry lights start going off. mine did. so call the doctor to see because believe me they will not mind taking a look at him if needed.
