The kerosene lamp was invented in Boston by Dr. Abraham Gesner in about 1846. The electronic calculator is a product of the 1960s but "solar" powered ones did not appear until the 1980s or 1990s, about the same time as the compact fluorescent lamp.

If you try to use a solar powered calculator by the light of a compact fluorescent lamp you may find it does not work. The reason is that the c.f. lamp does not produce enough of the right kind of light. However solar powered calculators will work by kerosene lamplight, which proves that Dr. Gesner was a mighty prophet.

So if you wish your porcupine or pig to be able to use their calculators, provide them with kerosene lamps. This will also assist with solar powered amplifiers for their violins, though the power required may mean you will need several lamps. And big ones.
