what is perception versus reality

Reality is supposedly what truly exists. Perception is how we see reality. But there is no such thing as reality, at least not a true, consistent, objective one. There is only what individual perception creates for us. We are trapped from behind each of our unique lens of the world; that's what we use to define "reality," and thus it cannot be separated from "reality."

First, I'd wonder how you were walking. How do you hit your toe so hard against a rock to make it hurt so badly, if you're just walking? Unless you stumbled or something. I don't know. That's never happened to me. (Thank goodness!) I also say that one should probaby watch the path and not the moon when traversing treacherous terrian in the dark XD If you were watching where you were going, you wouldn't need steel-toed boots. And life is more fun, I think, when you *don't* get hurt. As for the lover part, well, I can't really say much about that since I've never had one. Much less yours.... *awkward* Anywho. I don't really think it's perception vs. reality, either. Your nephew says life isn't fun if you don't get hurt, but I think the reality is just the opposite. But then we're both perceiving different things to be reality. I don't know, I think life is all about perception. Kind of like the glass is half full/empty thing. Now I'm rambling and I kind of forgot the point I was originally going to make. So I think I'll just end my answer here....

There are about 4 1/2 billion different perceptions out there,

only one reality

As you can see, there are many perceptions about the definitions of these terms. Your perception is your own persepctive, or point of view-- how you personally see the world around you. Reality is what is agreed upon by the masses as true. It is hard to say how 'real' reality is, or how universal our perceptions are, and that is why so much controversy exists about this topic.

Reality is what is. In any situation it is unlikely we can ever comprehend it totally, or ever will. So we cannot define it absolutely. But we must act in it, and by doing so we act upon it, potentially altering it. Perception is our understanding of any reality, from physical to psychological (relationships). It is a model we build in our minds, made convincing by our experience - and much else. It entails also our perspective on whatever reality we are observing. So it includes the information, knowledge, ignorances, limited senses (even expanded by tools), pre-conceptions, values, etc. That all makes it highly questionable. But it's all we have to work on. So we require integrity to constantly question it - courage to act upon it - and intelligence to critically assess the results and learn, constructively without dogma. As you can see from the state of the world, and much of human relationships, there is not a lot of all that about. Reality cannot be denied (e.g. Earth's limits to exploitation) but we cling to customary illusions that seem to have profited us in the past (another perception). So they become delusions, and therefor dangerous. That is the danger of beliefs, which are different from faith. Beliefs are always "in" something, and imply assumptions and expectations. Faith is an entrustment, with neither. That takes much more courage than comforting hope, or certainty (which is most likely false, given ignorance, etc), which is all most religions have to offer. By the way I like waia's succinct answer way up there.

Perception is the value of reality.

In short, reality is based on consensus of a group of people. Perception is how one person see things. If that person see something but the group all see something else then that person is likely to be wrong because of consensus reality.

Perception is your understanding of what you observed or your reality. Reality is what actually is true...whether it appeared to be or not. Reality is the truth...perception is what we believe is the truth.

You may percieve something one way. And you can truly and honestly believe it with everything you have. But it doesn't matter what you think, feel, or belive. What's real is what's real. And it can be proven as real. Reality is there whether you believe in it or not. (There are plenty of people who don't believe reality) But your perception is made up by you, your thought process, and what your mind believes.

This is more easily understandable if one considers the actual scale of the components of an atom. If one takes into account the fact that the neutrons, protons and electrons of an atom actually have huge spaces between them it becomes clear that the atoms that make up seemingly solid objects are made up of 99+ percent empty space.

This alone does not seem too important till you add the idea that the atoms that make up seemingly solid objects are more of a loose conglomeration that share a similar attraction but never really touch each other.

At first glance this does not really seem relevant, but closer analysis reveals that this adds a tremendous amount of empty space to solid objects that are already made up of atoms that are 99 percent space. When so-called solid objects are seen in this light it becomes apparent that they can in no way be the seemingly solid objects they appear to be.

We ourselves are not exceptions to this phenomenon.

These seemingly solid objects are more like ghostly images that we interpret as solid objects based on our perceptual conclusions.

From this we must conclude that Perception is some sort of a trick that helps us to take these ghostly images and turn them into a world we can associate and interact with. This clever device seems to be a creation of our intellect that enables us to interact with each other in what appears to be a three dimensional reality.

I hope that helps to answered your question.

Love and blessings Don
