Jiu jitsu is good, but take other styles like Tae kwon do(tay kwon dough, Korean arts have most powerful back-kicks), Aikido goes well with Jiu jitsu, judo.I suggest getting Dan Inosanto's "Absorb what is useful", will help combine these.(Bruce Lee combined many arts to develop Jeet kune do).Learn some floor/ground styles could hurt.Best to avoid getting into that situation in the first place,a 3rd degree black-belt would do better against a street fighter because the street guy has only a few moves to a black-belt has 1000's of moves he would not use twice.

Neither, take judo. Judo is like wrestling, but slightly more refined and martial arts like. It really is more practical, most martial-arts tend to spend a lot of time on techniques that are mostly just for show, while judo is all effectiveness baby!
