I have an 04 Jeep Grand Cherokee that has an error code of "bad Throttle Position Sensor". Is it typical for a TPS to go bad on a 2004? I understand that, depending on the make and model, some can be adjusted. If I just replace it will it come with the proper settings? Should I leave it to a machanic?

I suspected a TPS problem on my previous car. The way to test it is with the engine off but ignition on run, measure the voltage across the wires as you move the throttle from closed to fully open.

You want to look for the voltage jumping around in value or dropping to zero, indicating a dead spot. It should change smoothly from maybe 1v. to 12v. (may vary by type of car). You can stick a pin in the leads to attach your volt meter to it.

Change it, yes it could deffinately cause stalling problems because the PCM doesnt know where ur throttle is..it could either trow tons of fuel at it thinking the throtle is on the floor or it could cause a lean condition which can cause internal engine problems..it is very possible it could be causeing ur gas mileage problems however it is WAY MORE likely that ur bad gas mileage is due to the fact that most gasoline has ethanol in it now and its been causing lots of problems/complaints on gas mileage at the fors dealer where i work.

i own a shop, and no it wont come back to the right setting on it,you,d be better off letting a mechanic replace this one,if you don't the idle will jump up,and down on it all the time, and it will die a lot when its cold, but id let a good shop do this one,the charge isn't that much, i usually charge around 45 bucks to install and set them, and that's pretty cheap these days, good luck,i hope this help,s.,use this as a quote, and it might help save you some money on the job, good luck.

Yes you need to leave it to a technician. It needs to be " set" properly and that requires some skill and special tools.
