my old provider (tv cable) had higher speeds (from 500kbp to 1.5mbp) but service more erratic, e.g. some days speed low. service suddenly drops, etc. i am trying the dsl of a phone company and quality seems more consistent whole day. problem is their speeds are lower (300-500kbps) than cable company for the same monthly charge. which provider should i cancel? can't afford both.

I've had dsl for a while now, and it has only been down once, after a big storm. However, my friends have cable, and they compain and moan all the time about there speed dropping. They use a lot of bandwidth with games and downloads, and suspect that the company has put a bandwidth cap on them. Just to let you know, Verizon is coming out with a fiber optic service that is faster than cable and is supposed to be about the same price. Verizon is my dsl provider, so if they have as good of fiber optics as dsl, then it should rock.

What you get from the cable company isn't DSL. And which one is better will depend on your provider. I have DSL, and my friend has cable. I haven't noticed any difference in them to determine which is better.
