i've raised my cat from a kitten. he's now six when i brought him home i already had a god. they got along great. sadly my dog has passed. i got a new dog a few months later and my cat absolutly hates the new dog. i don't know what to do to help my cat get along with my new dog. i've had this new dog for 5 months now and my cat wont go near him. they are both fixed. my cat stays on one side of my house and the dog doesn't bother him, but he wont go near the dog. does anyone have anyideas how i can get my cat to be civil with my dog. their vet has told me i shouldn't force the issue and that my cat may never like my dog.

It's a matter of time. Think about it, the cat has been around now for a long time. With losing the dog that your cat was used too and now having a new dog. The cat isn't very happy right now, and I don't really blame him. Give it time, as long as it takes. There is nothing you can do but sit back and wait it out. It's good too that the cat and new dog keep their distance from each other. No one is getting hurt, right? Chill and let nature take it's course. Some day, who knows when, your cat will get along with your new dog. It will happen, when the cat and the dog are ready to make friends.

Sad but true. Your vet is correct. Kittens are generally more accepting of other animals in their territory than full grown cats. Especially when the animal is there from the beginning. (Though this is not always so.) To your cat the new dog is an invader. As long as he isn't attacking your dog just let them be. He may eventually accept the pup, and he may not.You may have to be satisfied with tolerance.

Do as your vet said and don't push them together. I know that five months seems like a long time but it isn't. Hopefully, in time your cat will get use to the new member of the family. Then they may never be friends. As long as they are able to co-exist then that is all you can hope for. Love them both.

I agree with your Vet. Animals aer just like people, they form relationships & are able to like or dislike.
I have a small "pride" or pack of cats. & I adopted a new cat last year....& they HATED him....Eventually I had to give him away because he was causing problems with my other cats....
& I also have a Senior cat that HATES baby kittens....But once the babys mature into older cats, she is ok with them.

So you are going to have to let your cat decide if & when it will lilke your dog.

Good luck & I hope it works out.
