No, beauty is aesthetic appreciation and is more or less universally evolved in human appreciation. What is euphemistically called " beauty " most often is something else, like, truth, kindness. empathy. These things have names and only people like Oprah forget that. Beauty has been quantified since the time of Darwin, it is just that no one pays attention to science in the USA anymore.

Beauty is both relative (subjective) and"absolute," (objective)

Beauty is objective in the sense that one of the predicates to beauty is symetry. For example humans and other animals veiw potential mates initially to discover if they posses any gross deformities that might indicate disease or other conditions that could inhibit successful rearing of offspring.

The "relative" or subjective area is probably broken into several parts.
1) Beauty has to meet prior expectations and those prior expectations are conditioned by the exprience of being part of a group. That group may exhibit certain physical or psychological characteristics that, because we are more familar with them than with other characteristics, we find attractive.
2) Beauty has to both meet our comfortable expectations and present something that is foreign, new, exotic or unusual. But those novel characteristics must appear within a context with which we are familiar.

It shouldn't be, but men and women alike like eye candy. Women want to look pretty, pick up any magazine and you know this is true. Men want women to look good. Women want to look good for men. Celebrities are good looking and we want to look like celebrities. It's not healthy, but it is so typical of a group of people who give in to their hormonal desires and we are after all a sexual society. I am glad I was cute when I was young because if I wasn't, I think that alot of people wouldn't have helped me through what I needed in life. I didn't even have to have sex to get me through. Just bat my eyes. Now, I am older and not near as desirable, but I am still a nice looking person and I am intelligent. It is my intelligence that gets me through things now, still, wearing nice clothes and taking care of my body helps me as well even if I am not 20. So, yes, beauty is relative, even though it shouldn't be.

Of course. (I assume you are referring to human beauty.) Although there are some traits that are more generally considered to be beautiful than others, different people define beauty differently. Different cultures also have varying standards for beauty.
