Humans want power because they don't want to be weak. Being weak lowers your chance for survival. Is that why people want power so much?

I think that you are correct.

However, I am seeing a new mantra that many people are seeking: the power of the individual. Many individuals are becoming autonomous units and perceive that all power and truth lies within themselves rather than in the morality of the culture in which they live.

It's a definitely a good hypothesis. It could be fear of weakness stemming from a fear of death.

It could also be fear of unattractiveness, which would then lower the probability of procreating. "The lead male gets all the ladies" sort of thing.
