Unitas is definately one of the greatest of all time...47 straight games with a TD pass may never be broken, and he won several championships (most before the superbowl era). Having said that, he's still not as good a Montana or Elway.
P.S. - Namath is one of the most overated QB's of all time....not even close to the top of any category, one championship. The only reason anyone still talks about him is that guarantied win in the Superbowl...without that he would have faded away long ago.

I wouldn't call him underrated, it's just been a long time since he played. The game has changed so much with rules changes that passing records from his era to the modern game does not relate well.
I'm surpised actually he still gets mentioned as much as he does with many successful quarterbacks that have had stellar careers since such as Staubach, Bradshaw, Montana, Marino, Elway, Favre, Brady and Manning.
I wonder who was considered the best ever quarterback while Unitas and Starr were playing? Sammy Baugh or Sid Luckman?

I think he underated in a sense that people try to compare QB's from later era's to him by saying that they are the best QB of all time. But is he really underated no not by people with real football knowledge, they give him his props. It is the people that just started to watch football that dont. Being a Baltimore native I think Johnny U is a football god.

Johnny U will always be my sentimental favorite. he was outstanding in his day, and did so much for the NFL in the early days.
others may bypass his stats (although probably not the record ot 47 consecutive games with a TD pass), but i will always consider him the greatest.

He set the standard by which all QB's were measured and can not be easily dismissed from being one of the best in the history of the game.

I think it is because he played a LONG time ago but people talk about him especially after the Colts won Super XLI

Nah. they talk about him enough. He was great in a time where passing wasn't the hottest thing to do, but put him in the 80's and 90's, and he's no more than just a good QB.
