We moved in two years ago and our inspector tested for asbestos - and found none. But the previous owners had broken up some of the asbestos tile when they installed french drains in the basement. There are no loose parts now and we'd like to cover it with wall to wall carpeting to create a rec room (we have an 18 month old). But now we have two problems - I didn't realize these were asbestos, so now I'm worried about our health AND no one will install carpet over the broken tile! What do I do??

i wouldnt take this lightly, that needs to be professionally removed or steps to make sure it is not disturbed in future, if it is broken, then anything that would disturb it would casue asbestos to become airborne, which is not good for your health or even worse for your baby. i would seek help ASAP. It should be removed or enclosed as not to be disturbed. I would get it out. probably very costly. I am not sure if u can do anything about the inspector, i hope so, some of those people do a SHI**Y job. GOOD LUCK

First if there are asbestos tiles do you really want to put carpet down and let your 18 month old play in the floor? Second, if you put carpeting down on uneven floors, after a while even with padding you will be able to see the shape of the floor under the carpet. What a waste of money on nice carpet. Spend the extra, get rid of the asbestos, put down an even floor and add the nice carpet.

HELLO, I WOULD SIMPLY USE DURHAMS ROCK HARD POWDER MIX PUTTY AND FILL IN THE PLACES WHERE YOU HAVE MISSING PIECES OF TILE. TOP SCRUB THE FLOOR WITH A LOW SPEED 17 OR 2O INCH SCRUBBER AND A MULTI PURPOSE FLOOR CLEANER OR MILD STRIPPING AGENT. USE A BLACK FIBER PAD (LOOKS LIKE A BRILLO PAD) SOAK THE FLOOR WITH THE PROPER MIX OF CLEANER AND SCRUB AWAY. BE SURE TO KEEP FLOOR PUDDLED WITH SOLUTION. ONCE YOU HAVE TOP SCRUBED THE FLOOR, MOP WITH PLAIN WATER ONCE AND FLOOR CONDITIONER 2 TIMES. THIS PROCESS WILL SCORE THE TILE SURFACE WITHOUT CAUSING ASBESTOS TO BE RELEASED INTO THE AIR. IF YOU ARE USING A GLUE DOWN CARPET WITH A 400 SERIES GLUE THAN THE INSTALLER CAN FLAT COAT THE SURFACE WITH THE GLUE COVERING EVERY INCH, THAN FLIP THE TROWEL AND FORM RIDGES. THIS GLUE WILL REMAIN PLYABLE FOR YEARS AND SHOULD SEAL THE SURFACE. IF YOU PLAN ON USING A LAY AND STRETCH CARPET, I WOULD APPLY 2 OR THREE COATS OF OIL ENAMEL PAINT TO THE TILE BEFORE THE CARPET IS LAID. PS. CONSIDER THAT THE MASTIC THAT WAS USED TO STICK DOWN THE TILE HAS MORE ASBESTOS THAN THE TILE. MOST TILES PRODUCED HAD ONLY 1 TO 3 PERCENT ASBESTOS CONTENT. ABATEMENT COMPANYS ARE EXPENSIVE BUT IF YOU CAN AFFORD TO HAVE A QUALIFIED COMPANY REMOVE THE TILE I WOULD DO SO. DO NOT REMOVE THE TILE YOURSELF!!!! GOOD LUCK...

Fill in any gaps in the tiles to make an even surface, then lay hardboard underlay over the tiles. This will give you agood surface for the carpet. The asbestos tiles are not a health hazzard so long as they are not disturbed. It's only whenasbestos is being cut or broken up, thus creating dust, that it is not healthy.

Use leveling cement. It's real thin and will fill in and level off the broken/missing tile pieces. You could then paint the whole floor with Latex DryLok paint to seal it. No asbestos issues.

I don't know if the asbestos tiles should be removed or not, I would contact your local building codes office to find out what you should do.I would not want to have them in my house.

flooring that incorporates asbestos, whilst intact and in reliable situation, is extra often than not seen nonfriable and isn't any longer unsafe. despite the fact that, this is safer and extra trouble-free to no longer do away with it. If there are products that are broken and loose there are preparation on secure coping with and disposal on the positioning listed in the source.
