Its personal preference. Try both and see which you prefer.

No, you don't have to use tampons. I am 35 years old and have never used tampons in my life. There are benefits to both, but if you don't mind avoiding swimming and wearing bathing suits during "that time" pads truly are better for your body. Think about it, with tampons you are keeping all of that goop in your body until you remove the tampon, as well as the health risks they advertise on the pamphlet in the tampon box.

No you don't have to use tampons if you don't want to. It's a matter of personal choice. I used to use them but stopped for medical reasons unrelated to tampons. I went back to using pads.

Seriously, it's preference. Personally, I don't think tampons are as sanitary. Also, there is risk of infection with them, leakage, slippage--just a host of issue. But pads have their problem s too. If you're a virgin and have a hymen, be aware that inserting a tampon may damage that hymen. So don't go shoving one in if you want to keep that intact. Also, tampons take some getting used to. But, if you want to swim during your cycle, then they're a smart choice. But keep in mind that pads are super thin and effective now! :)
